Inspiration from Eco-Farm

Food as Medicine,Food as Poison

We often think of food poisoning as an acute thing, such as having a bad experience after a night out at dinner.Very few, if any of us, would consider food poisoning as the result of something we eat everyday.

By the same token, our culture looks toward medicine to heal the ills of both a bad night out at dinner, and the ills of a long term diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in carcinogens. We often look to medicine to provide an acute fix, such as a pill that addresses the symptoms of disease, and do not look to the root of the problem.

The amount of scientific knowledge that is showing the benefits of organically grown foods over conventional is getting larger each year. We now know that well grown organic produce has, on average, 30% more antioxidants than well grown conventional produce. At that rate, imagine the medicinal quality of eating just a single organic plum everyday.

But it is not just how our food is grown and processed. In order for our society to utilize food as medicine, we need to reconnect with the source of our food. Many of us had at least a grandparent who had a backyard garden or knowledge of where food came from and how it was produced. Today is the first generation in history where many of our young people do not have that last thread of connection to our food source.

Connecting Food, Health, and Environment, is about bringing back the awareness and the tools to our community to begin to look at food as medicine. Medicine that can not only heal us as individuals but heal our community and our planet.

Let us look to the age old wisdom of “we are what we eat” or “an apple a day”, and remember both our roots to the land and our ability to heal with foods.

I wondered

if the youth were inspired
Will they feel compelled to put
thoughts, ideas, feelings to paper? Plant
have they experienced freewrite?

as we practiced skills. Grow
Our physiology is in relationship to our environment.
wind and birds allow us to heal

This was a pulled apart Freewrite on observation from the summer. Youth, apprentices, and I under the grape harbor, grapes half green- none raisins yet.
Early morning mid summer breeze
and warmth that was thought of at heat
until it really got hot.
Bright faces, ready to take on the world, or rather, their corner of their school, garden, home, community. Of course there was just being. summertime. the possibility of getting paid... I wondered if we were doing a good job, or at least a better job. Urban farmers growing, youth harvesting, and seniors stopping by to pick up some much needed produce and validating the work of us all.

ok will i always end on a good note
or always with a side bar comment?

Plan Graphics for the Landscape Designer

Something is missing...skills in design graphics and presentation.

Solution: register at your local junior college

As the instructor said, we will be learning a visual language. I am kinda good at languages, not so good at graphics. Wish me luck!

Carnaval 2008 from the earth up

Our Group: Viva Permacultura

Theme: Building a Permanent Culture Through Ecology, Art, and Healing

To embrace my love of dance, healing arts, and natural costume design I am organizing a team to participate in the 2008 carnaval parade.
If you don't know, you betta ask somebody!

Keep an eye out, planning and practice will happen throughout the cold winter months. What a better way to spend a rainy day than creating art?

Sleeping Outside

This weekend was a great few days spent in Bolinas as a part of an 8 shields Acorn organizing team for the new 4 seasons permaculture course.

Homelearning is to choose a sit spot and get in some "dirt time" with nature.

I will also throw on my 'to-do':
- sleeping outside more often
-study patterns- padroes: natural, social, and personal
- sit spot; particular attention to bird language
